Laser Skin Resurfacing

The winds of time take a toll on our facial skin, and their effects manifest by dark spots, uneven skin tone, dull skin, fine lines and wrinkles, and loose skin. While surgical procedures can correct these problems, not all patients require surgery. Laser skin resurfacing allows us to reverse the ravages of time by removing the most damaged areas of skin without sedation. This procedure can be done as a standalone intervention, or in conjunction with surgery. It is very well tolerated, and results can be seen within weeks. Plastic Surgeons of Northern Arizona offers the latest in laser technology, employing carbon dioxide lasers, the Palomar Laser, the Fractional Laser, and the Candela Laser. Fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes and mouth can be smoothed. Deep laugh and frown creases can be softened. Some acne and surgical scares can be minimized. The surface of the skin can be "freshened", revealing the new skin underneath and also stimulating a renewal of the skin's collagen for a softer, smoother appearance.

Laser Treatment of Stretchmarks

At Plastic Surgeons of Northern Arizona, we use the Palomar 1540 laser handpiece for a variety of relatively mild but very effective skin rejuvenation procedures. Recently, the FDA approved the use of the Palomar 1540 handpiece for the non-surgical treatment of stretchmarks (striae), including both pale stretchmarks (striae alba) and reddish stretchmarks (striae rubra.)

In the Palomar 1540 treatment of stretchmarks, the laser generates heat which is targeted at stretchmark scar tissue directly beneath the skin. The laser heat stimulates the generation of collagen, which helps the skin to repair itself. This causes the thin, stretched skin of the stretchmarks to thicken, improving appearance and returning the skin to a more normal look.

The Palomar 1540 laser is the only laser approved by the FDA for the treatment of stretchmarks. Possible side effects include slight discomfort during treatment (the laser light is applied incrementally to avoid burning the skin) and a temporary, slight darkening of the skin of the treated area, which may occur after treatment.

Spider Vein Removal (Sclerotherapy)

Spider veins, technically known as telangiectasias, are small clusters of purple, blue or red veins which commonly appear on the legs of women as they age. Spider veins are a very common cosmetic concern- it is estimated that more than half of the adult female population is bothered by spider veins. Plastic surgeons are able to treat spider veins with sclerotherapy, which involves injections of a sclerosing solution into the veins. This solution causes the spider veins to collapse and eventually become less visible. Sclerotherapy is performed in the doctor's office and takes only a short amount of time (15 to 45 minutes). A patient's activity usually is not limited following sclerotherapy.
